The design trend for many new construction renovations in Washington DC is the Waterfall Kitchen Island. From condos to townhouses to single families, developers are wasting no expense in the kitchen. It is correct strategy because the kitchen is the most important room in the house. 

I think the most important aspect of the waterfall design is to make sure there are outlets located under or on the island to make it a usable work space. Otherwise it is wasted space, especially since most Washington DC home buyers work from home.
